What to Wear With a Navy Pencil Dress

The pencil skirt. One of the most feminine, elegant and sexy pieces of clothing a woman can wear. This one is a personal favourite, but it can be difficult to find versatile ways to wear it for different occasions. These are my top tips for how to style a pencil skirt for different occasions, from the most formal business events to a casual trip to the store.

Business formal:

The most formal occasion for a pencil skirt is formal business attire. Think CEOs and Lawyers. As with most formal business outfits, the colours should be muted and neutral. Bright colours are youthful and sometimes come across as unprofessional, especially for very-formal business settings.

The Skirt:

Choose simple staple colours like black, navy or grey. The fabric should be natural and therefore have no stretch. Formal pencil skirts will have a lining and a vent to allow better movement.

The Top:

A simple white or pastel shirt will always work, but slim-fitting turtlenecks or blouses work as well. Again, choose muted and neutral colours. The classic white top and black skirt combination will always work, as will a light blue blouse with a navy skirt. Generally, the top should be a different colour to the skirt if possible.

The Shoes:

The most formal shoe choice would be a pointed-toe stiletto heel (read more about heel and toe styles here). Choose a shoe colour that works with your outfit (navy for a navy skirt, black for a black skirt etc.). Rounded toes and straps are slightly less formal but still appropriate for most business-formal dress-codes.

Other Accessories:

For a further elevated look, wear a matching blazer to turn your pencil skirt into a suit. Choose minimalistic jewellery such as stud earrings and very simple necklaces should be worn, with no large watches. Use a simple leather map or briefcase, rather than a handbag. I also like to wear a pair of glasses for formal occasions.

Hair and Makeup:

Make sure your hair is sleek and well placed. Having your hair in an up-do is a sure-fire way to keep it out of your face and well-placed, but wearing your hair down is also appropriate if it is sleek and smooth.

Business casual:

A business casual dress code usually leaves a lot open to interpretation and personal style. I like to use more colour and some simple patterns to make it more interesting. As long as you remain professional and relatively conservative (no drastic cleavage or super-short skirts), you can try a lot of things!

The Skirt:

Business casual pencil skirts can be of lesser structure than a formal skirt. I like the occasional stretchy material since it can be more comfortable, at which point your skirt won't have any vents. Bright colours are appropriate but might be too flamboyant for certain personalities.

The Top:

Brighter or patterned tops are appropriate for business casual. Depending on the season, turtleneck knitwear jumpers are appropriate. Looser fitting blouses can also be great for this type.

The Shoes:

You could easily wear flat shoes as part of a business casual look, but I think small heels make the outfit much more feminine. Compared to business formal, the shoes can easily have a smaller heel, rounded toes and straps to make them more comfortable.

Other Accessories:

Business casual allows for the use of large handbags or shoulder-bags, so this can be a great accessory. Slightly more extravagant jewellery such as large watches, stacked necklaces and dangly earrings are also appropriate.

Casual

Pencil skirts don't have to be reserved for work. Paired the right way, they can make up part of a more casual and versatile outfit. Although pencil skirts will always have a certain level of formality, these tips will help you dress them down.

The Skirt:

Pretty much any style of pencil skirt can be worn for casual outfits. Bright colours, patterns and stretchy fabrics are more likely to appear casual. You can also get away with a slightly shorter length (just above the knee).

The Top:

For a casual look, a plain fitted t-shirt can work very well, as well as slightly looser fitting sweaters like the bat-winged sweater shown below. Bright colours, patterns and simple fabrics such as cotton should be used.

The Shoes:

Any style of flat shoes (pumps, boots, sandals etc.) are great for casual outfits. Bright-coloured shoes and more flamboyant patterns will decrease the formality of the outfit. However, due to the shape of pencil skirts, I prefer to wear heels to keep the outfit feminine and elongating the figure.

Other Accessories:

Top off an outfit like this with a wide belt and a big handbag. Extravagant jewellery is suitable for casual outfits but be careful it doesn't appear too tacky.

How to Style a Pencil Skirt – The Bottom Line

It can be difficult to know how to style a pencil skirt for different occasions, but pencil skirts truly can be versatile and appropriate no matter the day! Remember to choose colours and accessories that represent your personality, style and seasons.
